Alluvial Sponge Comb Installation

The Alluvial Sponge Comb was  originally conceived as part of a housing design competition held in response to Hurricane Katrina.

With just the outline of an idea to go on, I was brought in to design, fabricate and ship to Italy a full size mock-up to be installed in the courtyard of the American Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

The sponge comb is comprised of a series of bladders, intended to be filled with a superabsorbent material, that swell up when wet creating an impenetrable flood barrier that when not inflated allows easy passage between the fingers.
